The Competition Summer School is an intensive 10-day training course on EU competition law and policy for officials from the Competition Authorities of the partner countries. Each year in July, the Competition Summer Schools will run in parallel at an academic institution in Europe:
- Competition Summer School for Chinese Officials
- Competition Summer School for Japanese, Korean and Indian Officials
- Competition Summer School for Officials from the ASEAN Member States
The programme is designed to provide participants with a deepened knowledge and understanding of EU competition law and policy, covering both its general principles and its practical application. Leading academics and practitioners will deliver lectures covering a wide range of topics, for example the institutional framework, economic analysis, horizontal and vertical restraints, abusive conduct and merger control.
The Competition Summer School programmes are tailored to the needs and interests of the partner countries and participants, responding to recent developments in both the EU and the partner countries to ensure an up-to-date and relevant training programme. The lectures combine theory with practical experience in the form of cases and examples to encourage problem solving and discussions. Participants are encouraged to discuss approaches and experience within their jurisdiction with their counterparts.
The participants from all the courses will be joined together for a day visit to the headquarters of the European Commission Directorate-General for Competition in Brussels, Belgium. There they will have the chance to meet officials from DG Competition and receive a first-hand introduction to the work of DG Competition, the European Competition Network and EU policy on merger review, state aid and antitrust.
All officials from the Competition Authorities of the partner countries are invited to attend the Competition Summer School. A maximum of 90 participants are accepted every year. Participants are provided with full training materials in English and board and lodging at the campus.
