Competition Summer School for Japanese, Indian & Korean Officials

The Competition Summer School for Japanese, Indian and Korean Officials took place between 2nd and 13th July 2018 at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. The summer school was attended by 4 officials from the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC), 5 officials from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and 4 officials from the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC).

The officials followed an intensive 10-day programme at the College of Europe campus designed to deepen their knowledge and understanding of EU competition law and policy. Leading academics and practitioners introduced a wide range of topics, including the institutional framework, economic analysis, horizontal and vertical restraints, abusive conduct and merger control. Addressing the challenges faced by the three jurisdictions, the programme also covered the application of competition law to market economies, market concentration and enforcement. The lectures combined theory with practical experience in the form of recent cases and examples, which encouraged problem solving and class discussions and comparisons.

On 10 July, the officials joined their counterparts from China and the ASEAN Member States for a day visit to the European Commission Directorate-General for Competition in Brussels. Officials from DG Competition and the General Court of the European Union introduced the officials to DG Competition, the European Competition Network, the Court of Justice of the EU and EU policy on merger review, state aid and antitrust and cartel enforcement. The closing remarks were delivered by Mr. Johannes Laitenberger, Director-General at DG Competition.

All 13 officials successfully completed the Competition Summer School and received their certificate during the official closing ceremony on 12 July.
