2019 Competition Summer Schools for ASEAN, Chinese, Indian and Korean officials

The 2019 edition of the Competition Summer Schools took place in July 2019 at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. This year’s programmes kicked-off on 1 July for officials from the ASEAN Member States and officials from India and Korea, followed by the programme for Chinese officials on 8 July. A total of 64 officials and academics participated in the activity, including from the ASEAN Secretariat, Cambodia, China, India, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam.

The officials followed an intensive 10-day training course designed to deepen their knowledge and understanding of EU competition law and policy. Common training sessions were alternated with focused sessions tailored at the different jurisdictions. Leading academics, officials and practitioners delivered courses on  a wide range of topics, including the objectives and instruments of EU competition law, vertical and horizontal restraints, economics of competition law, mergers and acquisitions, public and privileged undertakings, abuse of dominance, state aid control, the EU anti-trust procedure and the impact of the digital economy. The lectures combined theory with practical experience in the form of recent cases and examples, which encouraged problem solving and class discussions and comparisons.

On 9 July, the three programmes joined for a day visit to the European Commission Directorate-General for Competition in Brussels. Officials from DG Competition and the General Court of the European Union introduced the officials to the work of DG Competition, EU antitrust and cartel enforcement, EU merger review, EU state aid policy, the European Competition Network, the Court of Justice of the European Union and defending competition decisions before the court. The closing remarks were delivered by Mr. Cecilio Madero Villarejo, Deputy Director-General at DG Competition.

All 64 participants successfully completed the Competition Summer School and received their certificate during the official closing ceremonies on 12 and 19 July.
